For the last few years, I have been seeing ads for a light show called the “Wonderlights” in County Dublin. They are a fabulous interactive light show staged on the gorgeous grounds of Malahide Castle. And after years of “I should go” and “I wish I had gones”, I finally went last year. And I loved it. It was a spectacular walk through the most amazing light displays and projections. But honestly, getting there by public transport was a nightmare.
But I thought about the display throughout the year and I debated whether I should go again this year. So, you can imagine my delight when I found out that the Wonderlight Show was coming to Cork. (I was very excited). So I visited Wonderlights at Fota House last weekend and now I want to share my thoughts.
For context, Fota House is a regency mansion in East Cork which dates to the 1820s. The mansion is surrounded by gardens and an 11 acre arboretum. Though it once belonged to the Smith-Barry family, it is now in the care of the Irish Heritage Trust. There are guided tours of the house during the summer and the gardens are open throughout the year. The Wonderlights Experience is a walk through the gardens with light displays and projections on the walls of Fota House.

The walk is broken into several areas such as Star Meadow, Rainbow Tunnel, Enchanted Forest and Festive Lights. Some of the highlights for me were the light-up animal sculptures in the Arctic Oceans area, and the Pond Symphony.

As stunning as these displays are, visitors are constantly reminded how beautiful the natural surroundings are. Purple and blue spotlights give trees an ethereal glow. The lasers from the Pond Symphony make the leaves sparkle like gems. I came away with a deeper appreciation for the nature that surrounds me every day.

Be warned though, the tickets are not cheap. The Alpine Food and Drinks VIllage is incredibly dear too. I would avoid buying food or treats here at all, if you can. Luckily, I had dry weather when I visited but it would be less magical in the pouring rain. Be aware that the paths are muddy so watch your step. Also, don’t wear shoes that you are precious about.
Overall, I would happily recommend this to anyone. It is perfect for anyone with smallies to entertain and I saw plenty of adults enjoying the show too. Let me know if you’ve been and what you think, or if there’s anything like this in your own area.
